Boeckenberg Sports & Business in Deurne is a sports complex with a strong reputation in elite sports. The sports hall is home to Boeckenberg Korfball Club, one of the most successful korfball clubs in Belgium, as well as providing space for various other sports and business activities.
Because the club plays at the highest level, its the requirements for sports lighting are exceptionally high. Belgian and international korfball leagues have strict standards for brightness, uniformity and glare reduction, especially for live broadcasts and professional matches.
Boeckenberg therefore wanted a modern and energy-efficient lighting solution that not only met these stringent requirements, but also maximized the ease of play and durability of the installation.
Boeckenberg Sports & Business wanted a solution for the outdated lighting in their large sports hall. Frank De Schryver invited us to analyze the existing situation and make a proposal.
Lighting plays a crucial role in top-level korfball. Faulty lights or failure of fixtures can not only affect the quality of play, but also compromise player safety. The existing Fluorescent lighting was outdated and posed a high risk of malfunctions. In addition, the high energy consumption of the lighting caused a significant cost: almost 50% of the total energy cost of the building was caused by the sports hall lighting.
Another problem was light output. For korfball on top level requires a light intensity of at least 800 lux to ensure optimal visibility for players, referees and spectators. The old lighting no longer met this requirement, which negatively affected the quality of matches and training sessions.
In addition, the club needed new dimming scenarios and lighting groups to use lighting more flexibly depending on the type of activity. This was not technically possible with the old fluorescent lighting, making a complete modernization necessary.
During our introductory meeting we immediately conducted a limited audit out to survey the current situation. We measured the sports hall, determined mounting heights, mapped the ceiling structure and checked the existing floor plan. In addition, we gathered essential information, such as the annual number of lighting hours burned and current energy costs and consumption.
Based on this data, we went to work internally with a comprehensive analysis and a developed proposal. We conducted a lighting study to ensure that the new installation met the 800 lux standard for professional korfball. In addition, we calculated the relighting premium so that the customer could take full advantage of financial support. We also worked out a savings model, analyzing energy reduction and payback time. Finally, we prepared a quotation tailored to the specific needs of the sports hall.
For the installation, the customer wished to cooperate with his own trusted electrician, so this aspect was not included in the quotation. Our focus was entirely on delivering a high-quality, energy-efficient lighting solution that perfectly matched Boeckenberg Sport & Business' sports requirements.
The 162 old fluorescent fixtures of each 216W were replaced by 108 high-efficiency indoor sports LED fixtures from 140W. These fixtures are designed specifically for indoor sports where the ball is often played high. To minimize glare, a diffuse lens and slats, while a wide beam angle ensures that lighting remains uniform at high altitudes. This contributes to optimal visibility for players, referees and spectators.
Thanks to the new LED installation, a almost 60% lower annual lighting cost realized, while light output increased from 600 lux to more than 1000 lux. This means not only a significant improvement in playing conditions, but also a quick payback of barely 3 years.
In addition, a DALI control installed, giving each fixture a digital address and making it easy to set lighting groups or dimming scenarios via a touchscreen. This provides the club with maximum flexibility in the use of lighting customized for training, competition or events.
The collaboration with the customer's house installer went smoothly and professionally, completing the installation efficiently and on schedule.
The old system required constant maintenance with the replacement of old fluorescent tube lights.
The new LED lighting provides significantly higher light output, while cutting energy consumption in half compared to the old fluorescent lighting.
Our old fluorescent lighting was no longer adequate: too little light, high energy consumption and failures.
